Choosing the Right Living Option: Difference Between ILO and SIL Support

One of the primary goals of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is to help people with disabilities to live independently and build their capacity to take care of themselves and become active members of their community. Having a place to call home with suitable living arrangements is an important step towards achieving that goal. There are mainly two types of living options that the NDIS can fund: Individualised Living Options (ILO) (ILO) and Supported Independent Living (SIL).. There are certain fundamental differences between these two funded living options that should be discussed as part of your NDIS planning.

The primary difference is that Individualised Living Option (ILO) is designed around a single person while Supported Independent Living (SIL) can be availed of even if you live alone or if you live with other NDIS participants. While ILOs are more flexible when it comes to living options, SIL is a program of rostered care with more inflexible service options. That means the cost for this support will derive from the roster of care and will 13 depend on the type and level of support a participant requires. SIL is suitable for people with more intense care around the clock including overnight support. Though not considered a contemporary model, SIL is the living option that may suit people with higher support needs as it focuses on 24/7 care including supervision with daily tasks as well as personal care. ILOs are suitable for children over 18 looking to leave home and they are considered to be a more contemporary model and a good alternative to SIL. While SILs often require a capital investment, it is not necessary in the case of ILOs. These living options do not refer to the accommodation (i.e. the house itself ) but the support you will receive to live independently and build your capacity.
